Students from any department may participate in music courses and performing ensembles, most of which satisfy Wofford’s fine arts requirements. Wofford’s music program offers a wide array of performance opportunities in both vocal and instrumental groups. Private music lessons also are available. The college offers music scholarships, which require auditions.
Professor and chairman of the department Gary McCraw is a 1977 Wofford graduate. A talented musician, McCraw plays the organ at Wofford convocations and conducts most of the college’s musical ensembles. McCraw has been involved with the Spartanburg Little Theatre for more than 25 years, serving as pit pianist and conductor. He also serves as the director of music ministries and organist at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
During Dylan Hooper’s time as an undergraduate at Wofford, he was heavily involved in the activities offered by the music program, including: Wofford Singers, Wofford Men, Men’s Glee Club and Wofford Chamber Players. For Hooper, the Wofford music department was more than just theory classes and singing groups. “It provided me with countless performance opportunities both on and off campus, connected me with many well- respected musicians and scholars.” Hooper is currently teaching high school Spanish in Memphis, Tenn., with Teach for America.
