Biographical note: Dr. Allan Russell Broome was a native of Landrum, SC and a 1935 Wofford College graduate. After earning his seminary degree at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, he joined the Upper South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church in 1937. Most of his work in the conference was in its educational institutions. He was director of youth work for the conference, assistant superintendent of Epworth Children’s Home, executive secretary of the conference board of education, and superintendent, and later executive director, of Epworth. In 1957, he became secretary of the annual conference. In total, he was in charge at Epworth for some 23 years, and was conference secretary for 20 years. He was also president of the Methodist Conference Credit Union and on a number of conference committees. Retiring in 1977, he was called upon to serve as interim director of the Methodist Home in Orangeburg.

Summary note: The collection consists of correspondence of Rev. Broome as he dealt with issues surrounding Epworth Children’s Home, the Methodist Home, and other issues related to the South Carolina Annual Conference. It also includes copies of Sunday school lessons that he prepared in the summer and fall of 1950.
