Historical note: The College’s efforts at planning and evaluation, institutional research, marketing, and communications have evolved through the years, and in the early 1990s were brought together under the direction of Vice President Larry T. McGehee. The Public Relations, News Service, and Communications functions have evolved into the Office of Communications. The Office of Institutional Research and Evaluation has, since the early 1990s, conducted research about the college and other regional colleges and universities for benchmarking purposes. In his 23 years at Wofford, Dr. McGehee oversaw the college’s first major efforts at long-term strategic planning, culminating in the 1987 Masterplan and several subsequent revisions. He also oversaw relations with the F. W. Olin Foundation and with the Bonner Foundation.
Organization: The Records of the Vice President for Planning and Marketing are organized into 9 series: Office files and Special Events; the Olin Foundation; Bonner Foundation; Planning; The Masterplan; Marketing; Rankings; Communications Office; and Webmaster. Institutional Self-Studies form an additional record group (RG 721). Additional records generated by these offices may be found in the Communications Office Press Release series (RG 730), the College Calendar series (RG 731) and in the Wofford Towers/Wofford Today series (RG 732). These latter series are oriented toward publication rather than administrative content.
Scope and Content note: The contents of Record Group 720 are administrative in nature. The Planning Series includes a number of studies prepared by college officials and outside consultants, and also encompasses the preparation and revision of the 1987 Masterplan entitled “To Improve Quality.” The Marketing series documents the college’s efforts to present itself to its constituencies. The Rankings Series includes the various US News and World Report and Petersen’s Guides rankings. The Communications Series contains a number of memoranda relating to the history of the Public Relations and Communications offices. The Bonner Foundation and Olin Foundation series document the relationships between the college and these two foundations, which were largely managed by Dr. McGehee. The Olin Foundation series includes several proposals to the foundation, the rejection of one of which led to the college’s 1987 Masterplan and subsequent revisions. Other Olin Foundation files may be found in the Records of President Joab M. Lesesne. The Bonner Foundation series parallels other files in the Campus Ministry records, and documents the development of the Bonner Scholars program.
