Biographical note: Clarence Clifford Norton was born in Benton, Mississippi in 1896. A graduate of Millsaps College, he took a master’s degree at Emory and a doctorate in sociology at the University of North Carolina. He joined the Wofford faculty in 1925 as a professor of sociology and political science. He was a Methodist minister and a member of the South Carolina Annual Conference. He traveled in and wrote about Africa, publishing several articles on South Africa. He became dean of the college in 1942, serving in that position until 1953. For several years in the late 1940s, Norton was dean of administration while President Walter K. Greene served as president of both Wofford and Columbia College. In 1951-52, following Greene’s retirement, Norton was acting president. Returning to teaching, Norton remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1966. Around Wofford, Norton was perhaps most famous for his reading of “A Christmas Carol” on campus and all over the state each Christmas. Norton was also a cartoonist and caricaturist, drawing a regular cartoon in the South Carolina Methodist Advocate and other publications. He died in Hendersonville, NC in 1981.

Organization note: Organized into 5 series – personal papers; caricatures and cartoons; college papers; publications; and photographs

Summary note: The papers are a mixture of publications, personal papers, college papers, and caricatures. The college papers reflect administrative issues, financial, athletic, and other concerns, especially in the years from 1945 to 1953. The personal papers consist largely of correspondence on various subjects. The caricatures and cartoons series consists mostly of prints of his drawings and of the published newspaper clippings of his cartoons.
