Biographical note: James C. Dozier was a native of Galivants Ferry, South Carolina, born on February 17, 1885. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1904, and later, Dozier enrolled as a freshman at Wofford in 1915. He left Wofford in 1916 to go with the South Carolina National Guard to serve on the Mexican border. He went overseas as a first lieutenant with Companies H and G of the 118th Infantry, 30th Division, where he had a distinguished record of service. For his actions on October 8, 1918, near Montbrehain, France, he received the Medal of Honor. Returning to South Carolina, he became involved in business in Rock Hill, where his family had moved, and continued his service in the National Guard. He reorganized a unit and became its captain, and a year later, was promoted major. In 1926, Governor Thomas G. McLeod appointed him as the state’s adjutant and inspector general, to fill an unexpired term, and he was elected to a full term later that year. He was re-elected every four years until 1958, when he retired. General Dozier retired in 1959, and died on Oct. 24, 1974.
