1939
Dr. Charles H. Andrews Jr., July 19, 2014, Sumter, S.C. A World War II Army veteran, Andrews served with the France Belgium Medical Corps and the Austria Army of Occupation. He was a founding member of the Santee Summer Ministry and the Sumter/Clarendon Medical Association. Andrews was a governor-appointed state constable and a member of the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame, having served 23 years as the football team physician of Edmunds and Sumter high schools.
1944
William Gamewell “Bill” Major Jr., July 20, 2014, Camden, S.C. As a lieutenant in the Air Force, Major participated in both atomic bomb drops during World War II. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service. After the war he was promoted to captain and stationed in Okinawa in the Army of Occupation. Major then worked in banking for 38 years before serving as a school crossing guard for 20 years following retirement.

Milford Smith, Aug. 8, 2014, Clinton, S.C. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Smith retired from the South Carolina National Guard as a captain
1947
The Rev. Francis Louis Barth, Aug. 15, 2014, Mechanicsburg, Pa. For 45 years, Barth served pastorates in the Central Pennsylvania Conference. He served as the superintendent of the New Cumberland district.
Dr. Calvin Dendy Garrett, July 16, 2014, Sioux City, Iowa. A United Methodist pastor, Garrett saw duty as a Naval line officer during World War II and as a Navy chaplain during the Korean War. Active in the community, Garrett organized the Iowa Highway Patrol chaplain program and led traveling seminars in the United States and throughout the Middle East and Europe.
1949
Dr. Robert Duren Johnson Sr., July 15, 2014, Clinton, S.C. Johnson served as a dentist in the U.S. Army Reserves for 32 years. He retired as a colonel.
Keith F. Robinson, June 17, 2014, Jonesville, S.C. Robinson retired in 1987 as a vice president with S.C. National Bank. He then joined the staff of the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
1950
Jack Midford Becker, June 10, 2014, Chester, Va. An avid sportsman, Becker retired from ICI as a chemist after more than 20 years of service. He also retired from the Army Reserves with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Paul Andrew Wilson, July 26, 2014, Spartanburg. A retired textile executive, Wilson worked for Draper Corp. and Rockwell International. He volunteered as a probation officer working with the Juvenile First Offenders program and was a past district governor of Rotary International.

Harold Paul “Hal” Hamrick, Aug. 1, 2014, Bostic, N.C. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Hamrick was employed by General Electric and The Timken Co. He also taught at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and Blue Ridge Community College.
Col. Jack G. Whitted, June 7, 2014, Panama City, Fla. Whitted served in the U. S. Army for more than 30 years. He served tours in Korea and Vietnam. Among his awards were three Purple Hearts. After retiring from the military, he served as a general contractor, worked for the Bay County Property Appraiser’s Office and became a “gentleman farmer.”

Thomas Jackson “Jack” Herbert Jr., June 15, 2014, Flat Rock, N.C. A U.S. Army veteran, Herbert was a chemist patent examiner with the U.S. Patent Office for 35 years.

Thomas L. Bonday Sr., June 12, 2014, Williamsburg, Va. Bonday was the owner of Book ’n Card and Hampton Roads News Co. before his retirement in 2004.
1957
Philip Owen Garland, July 23, 2014, Danville, Ky. Garland taught elementary school in Florida and Kentucky for 37 years, retiring in 1996.
1959
Frederick Roger Inman, July 18, 2014, Statesboro, Ga. A veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Inman worked with Crown Central Petroleum in Atlanta. He particularly loved driving a school bus in Gwinnett County and serving as a youth baseball umpire and football coach.
Morris Benjamin Sinkoe, July 1, 2014, Asheville, N.C. Sinkoe was president of the Charlotte Hebrew Cemetery Association, president of the Epilepsy Association of North Carolina and served on the board of NPR radio of Charlotte and the Jewish Federation. He and his brother founded Famous Mart, Sinkoe Brothers Realty Holding Co. and Chicora Realty and Apartment of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Allen Samuel Way, June 5, 2014, Orangeburg, S.C. A retired general contractor, Way was a founding member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church of Orangeburg and a member of St. Johns Congaree Episcopal Church of Hopkins.

William Peter Gerry, July 7, 2014, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. A programmer and software engineer who worked on aerospace guidance systems, Gerry was a surfer, youth soccer coach, equestrian, cyclist and avid tennis player.

William Marvin “Bill” Blackwell Jr., Aug. 3, 2014, Union, S.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Jerry A. Burns, May 27, 2014, Inman, S.C. Retired as CEO of JPS Automotive and a well-known textile executive, Burns was an avid golfer who won many tournaments and club championships.
1967
William Russell “Russ” Hughes III, Aug. 7, 2014, Hopkins, S.C. Hughes served as an officer in the U.S. Army, achieving Ranger designation and the rank of captain. Following military service in Germany, he earned his Ph.D. in experimental psychology and dedicated his career to promoting the dignity of the mentally ill, including serving with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.

The Rev. Dr. Eugene Cavis McDowell, Aug. 12, 2014, Nantucket, Mass. McDowell earned advanced degrees from Yale and Boston University. After serving as a professor of religious studies at Brevard College, McDowell served as an Episcopal priest for 28 years.

The Rev. Robert Kevin Childs, July 10, 2014, Conway, S.C. Childs served as pastor of The Rock, a church that he started in 2004. He also served as chaplain for the Conway High School football team and was a football coach at Conway Middle School.

William Bennett “Bill” Drake, July 11, 2014, Spartanburg. “In Spartanburg, Bill was Ripon College’s most notable alumnus, not Harrison Ford. Because of the changing medium, there will never be another radio personality like him. He was the last great one of his breed,” said Richard Johnson after Drake’s death. Drake hosted the popular Spartanburg morning show, “Awake with Drake,” since 1976. He was named South Carolina Radio Personality of the Year three times and in 2004 was awarded The Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest honor. He was the long-time public address announcer for Wofford football and basketball.
C. Russell Farmer Jr., July 16, 2014, Spartanburg. Farmer spent his career at various comptrollership positions with Monsanto Co. He retired in 1985. Farmer was an active supporter of scholarships for student-athletes through the Terrier Club. He has asked that memorials be made to the Terrier Club.
Marjorie Russell Holliday, June 7, 2014, Gallivants Ferry, S.C. Mrs. Holliday and her husband, John Monroe Holliday, established an endowed scholarship at Wofford in memory of their son. The George J. Holliday III Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1969. George was a member of the class of 1968 and captain of the Wofford golf team when he was killed in a car accident. Awards go to student-athletes on the golf team.
