Wofford College offers a program to prepare graduates to teach in public and private schools in South Carolina and the nation. The program leads to licensure in grades 9-12 in biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, social studies (economics, government, history, psychology and sociology) and grades K-12 in French.

Wofford's programs of teacher preparation are designed to comply with the Policies, Procedures, Unit Standards, and Licensure Area Standards for Teacher Education Program Approval in South Carolina, adopted and made effective by the South Carolina Board of Education. Students successfully completing the Teacher Education Program at Wofford and passing the state-required national examinations are recommended for licensure in South Carolina. With reciprocity, licensure will also be available in all other 50 states.

"Anytime we hire a Wofford graduate…we know we’re going to get a good person," says Dr. Jimmy Littlefield ’69, superintendent in Spartanburg County School District 1. "We had two student teachers from Wofford last year, and they were both high quality people," he says. Littlefield believes that when it comes to preparing for secondary school teaching, "for many, many people the liberal arts college is the way to go." Even if you’re certified in mathematics, you need to have an understanding of history, government, philosophy," he says. "I look at a broad background as a positive."
