STARTALK Application

The program will select forty 8th – 12th graders who are energetic and highly motivated, and who demonstrate academic excellence (a GPA of B+ or above) in order to ensure the participants’ commitment and success.

Dates:

Pre-program orientation: Saturday June 7th, 2014
Program: Monday June 9th – Friday June 20th, 2014
Summer online modules: starting June 22nd – August 16th, 2014 

Eligibility:  

  1. Rising high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, or rising college freshmen.
  2. A GPA of B+ or above.
  3. Students that are energetic and highly motivated.
  4. Priority will be given to students who can attend the pre-program orientation, a majority of the program classes and the online modules, and both refresher workshops to continue their learning.
Application Checklist:
  1. Application and 200-word essay. The application includes a background survey focusing on your academic learning and foreign language learning experiences, and a statement of roughly 200 words. In the essay, please (a) describe your thoughts and feelings about learning foreign language and culture, (b) describe your goals to enroll in STARTALK @ Wofford, (c) provide any additional information that you consider relevant to your application.
  2. Official transcript: we require an official transcript from your high school. If you are a rising high school freshman, please submit an official transcript from your middle school. The official transcript must be in a sealed envelope, signed on the flap by the school/district counsel. If possible, have transcript mailed to us directly.
  3. A letter of recommendation: you must submit one letter of recommendation. For your convenience, you may fill out the information about the recommender, and a URL will be sent to your recommender and he/she can fill out the form online. If your recommender prefers to mail the letter, the letter should be in a sealed envelope, signed by the recommender on the outside flap.

Deadline: May 15, 2014 

Students will be admitted on a rolling basis.

Application processing: Completed applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Admission is granted on the basis of academic qualifications and the availability of space. The program may fill to capacity before the deadline. A space cannot be reserved until all of a student’s application materials are received. Please submit all your materials in a timely manner.

Once you are accepted to the program, you will receive an acceptance email. Upon confirmation of that email, each student will be given an information package. Each student will also be contacted concerning a phone interview to identify their language proficiency.

You must submit a recommendation as part of your application. The recommender will provide information about your initiative, ability to work with peers, discipline (mainly about out-of-school suspensions), and personality. The recommendation letter will be used solely for the purpose of evaluating your qualifications for study at STARTALK @ Wofford College summer Chinese program, and will not be available to any other institution, organization, or private party.
