Major and Minor Requirements

To meet the requirements for the Major in Sociology and Anthropology, students will take 30 credit hours by taking the 2 Core Proficiency courses, 1  Social and Cultural Inquiry course, 1 Social Theory, and 5 Complex Problems and Critical Thinking courses including at least 1 300- or 400-level SOC and at least 1 300- or 400-level ANTH course.  Majors will take the 3-hour Capstone course (SOC 450) in the spring semester of their senior year.  Students may apply cognate courses at Wofford College (e.g., Ethnography of the Middle East and North Africa) and/or in study abroad programs to fulfill credit requirements in the Complex Problems and Critical Thinking category.

To meet the requirements for the Minor in Sociology and Anthropology, students will take 15 credit hours by choosing the 2 Core Proficiency courses, and 9 credit hours from any other of the department’s offerings including at least 1 SOC and at least 1 ANTH course.  Minors are welcome to take the Capstone course (SOC 450) for an additional 3 hours [or as a substitute for one of the Complex Problems and Critical Thinking courses].

We strongly recommend Sociology majors and minors take Mathematics 140 – Statistics for their mathematics general education requirement.
