Meet Laura!

Laura

How long have you been at Wofford?
I have been at Wofford since 2000. In my previous life, I worked 20 years at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, starting there as a proofreader. Yes, I’m so old that my first job is now obsolete (but shouldn’t be)! I started there right out of high school, in the days of manual typewriters and very loud teletype machines. Yes, I am the resident dinosaur.

Favorite book?
My favorite book is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Favorite movie or tv show?
My favorite movie is To Kill a Mockingbird, and my current favorite TV show is The Good Wife (followed closely by Scandal and Parenthood).

Favorite quote?
My favorite quote is “You’re killing me, Smalls” (from the movie  The Sandlot), though I really like this one, too: From Dash Goff, Julia Sugarbaker’s writer ex-husband, played by Gerald McRaney, on Designing Women – “Yesterday, in my mind's eye, I saw four women standing on a veranda in white, gauzy dresses and straw-colored hats. They were having a conversation. And it was hot. Their hankies tucked in cleavages where eternal trickles of perspiration run from the female breastbone to exotic vacation spots that southern men often dream about. They were sweet-smelling, coy, cunning, voluptuous, voracious, delicious, pernicious, vexing and sexing... these earth sister/rebel mothers... these arousers and carousers. And I was filled with a longing to join them. But like a whim of Scarlett’s, they turned suddenly and went inside, shutting me out with a bolt of a latch. And I was left only to pick up an abandoned handkerchief and savor the perfumed shadows of these women... these southern women….” Yes, I know, they aren’t the traditional “favorite quote.”

What other hats do you wear at Wofford?
Counting my tiara? Fedora, batting helmet, Stetson, Carmen Miranda fruit hat and my capuchin.

I waste too much time...
watching TV, chilling with my dog, TD, a shiba inu.

These are a few of my favorite things...
Carolina Panthers, USC Gamecocks, Atlanta Braves … sense a theme here?

One last thing about you?
There’s a great book inside me, itching to get out. Be careful – you could end up in it!
