Photographs of Toms to be exhibited at Wofford
Monday, August 22, 2005
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Photographs by J. Frank Toms will be on display in the Sandor Teszler Library Gallery at Wofford College Sept. 1 through Oct. 27. An opening reception for the photographer will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.
A long-time professor of Spanish at Converse College, Toms also is known for his photography, particularly his color abstractions, the subject matter of which he has found everywhere – on decaying walls, dilapidated buildings, desolate and abandoned places, and streets filled with rusted objects, broken glass, torn signs, graffiti – finding in these images beauty, structure and meaning. His photographic works echo the abstract expressionist movement of the mid- to late-20th century more often associated with painting. The photographs on display are on loan from the collection of Converse College.
Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 p.m. to midnight.
