Spartanburg, S.C. - Wofford College will host an exhibit featuring the drawings of Ryan O'Mara beginning Wednesday, Nov. 1, and continuing through Dec. 15. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
O'Mara's drawings will be on exhibit in the Sandor Teszler Library Gallery. Hours for the gallery are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
In his work, O'Mara acknowledges the gallery space itself--the larger scale of his drawings makes them seem to surround and involve the viewer. The pieces consist of stacked, cut, and layered sheets of watercolor paper. The shape of the paper is as significant as the drawings themselves. The unorthodox form changes the boundaries of most works on paper by letting the drawing move across the wall in any direction and scale, and in the current installation, the gallery ceiling will also be used.
O'Mara thinks of the elements in his work as a kind of language of visual metaphors which appear and reappear as the viewer travels through space. His "narrative-scapes" describe an abstracted space with loose references to reality.
O'Mara holds the BFA from the University of Georiga and the MFA from the University of Tennessee. He also has studied in Cortona, Italy.
