Curt McPhail appointed executive director of The Space at Wofford

To lead professional development, career services programs for students

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Curt McPhail, a 1996 Wofford College graduate, has accepted the position of executive director of The Space in the Mungo Center at the college, effective Jan. 19, 2016.

McPhail, project manager of the Northside Development Group, received degrees in business economics and sociology from Wofford and received additional certification in community engagement from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

“Curt McPhail brings with him a wealth of experience as a leader and expertise in developing strong, diverse partnerships, building effective teams and achieving high quality outcomes in both local and global environments,” says Dr. Dennis M. Wiseman, Wofford’s provost. “He will be a terrific leader and mentor in providing Wofford students with the tools and skills for the world beyond Wofford – whether that’s in a career or in graduate school.”

McPhail also is the founding executive director of the internationally recognized organization globalbike inc. The marketing arm of the organization received the 2009 Beyond Sport Award from former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. McPhail served as program director for the Mary Black Foundation from 2004 to 2013 and previously was executive director of Stop the Violence.

He received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Wofford twice – as a graduating senior in 1996 and again in 2014 as an alumnus.

McPhail is 2016 graduate of the Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative, vice chair of the Institute for Community Peace (Washington, D.C.), and a graduate of Leadership Spartanburg. He received the 2012 Alumni of the Year Award from the Leadership Spartanburg Alumni Association and was named the 2012 Young Alumni of the Year at Wofford. In 2013, he was named a fellow of the Funders Network PLACES.

The Space in the Mungo Center at Wofford provides professional development, career services, real-world experience and entrepreneurial guidance to students.
