Modern Language Placement

Placement Overview

Incoming first-year students should take the appropriate language placement test as soon as possible after paying a deposit.  (The test must be completed no later than June 15.)

Once the placement test and previous academic work (high school transcript, AP/IB credit, transfer credit, dual enrollment credit, etc.) are evaluated, the course placement will be posted to myWofford. With the placement available, students can then create their course schedule plan including any of the courses in which they have been placed.  Students need to register for one of the courses in which they are placed.

Detailed Placement Process

  1. Students take the placement test in the language they studied in high school.

  2. The course placement is determined within 5-7 days of the completion of the placement test.

  3. The course placement is posted to myWofford and can be accessed here.

  4. All students are also granted permission to enroll in the 101 course of the languages not studied in high school except for Spanish (SPAN 101). Students wanting to register for SPAN 101 should complete the Spanish 101 Request Form on MyWofford.

  5. Students register for one of the courses in which they were placed. Seats in specific courses are not guaranteed.  Students should plan to be flexible.

Special Situations

  1. Students with the appropriate preparation and who enroll in and complete the 303 course with a grade of 'C' or better will receive the 6 credit hours for the 201 and 202 courses, as well as the three credit hours for the 303 course, for a total of 9 credit hours.

  2. Any student who only received credit for Latin or ASL on their high school transcript will be given the option to enroll in a 101 course for any language offered at Wofford.  Students in this particular situation do not need to complete the language placement test.

  3. Students can utilize CLEP to receive credit for French, German and Spanish. CLEP exams must be completed and the scores reported to the Office of the Registrar prior to matriculation. For more information, visit the AP, CLEP, Dual Enrollment, IB page on the Registrar’s site.
