SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales will speak at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in Leonard Auditorium in Main Building on Wofford College’s campus, presented by the Hipp Center on National Security and Foreign Policy.
“On Service and Sacrifice” will be the topic of the talk by Gonzales, who was appointed attorney general in 2005 by President George W. Bush. It is part of the Hipp Lecture Series on International Affairs and National Security. The event is free and open to the public.
Gonzales was appointed attorney general after serving four years as White House counsel – the first Hispanic American to hold the post. He was with Bush after he returned to Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11, 2001, as the president began formulating the nation’s response to the terrorist attacks on the country. Gonzales, a graduate of Rice University and Harvard Law School, was a business attorney for 13 years before becoming general counsel to then-Texas Gov. Bush. He then was Texas secretary of state and justice on the Supreme Court of Texas.
Founded in 2011, the Hipp Lecture Series on International Affairs and National Security is designed to create signature events at Wofford College. The goal of the events is to capture the attention of students and the public and draw them into important conversations on applying American leadership and ideals to the challenges of international affairs past, present and future. The lecture series is made possible through the generous donations of Wofford alumnus Van D. Hipp Jr. '82. The Hipp Center for National Security and Foreign Policy offers exceptional experiential learning options for Wofford students through internships and other scholarly opportunities that focus on topics and events significant to the nation.
