AP and IB Credit

Course Exemption and Credit Through Testing
There are several testing programs through which students preparing to enter college may seek to earn exemption and credit for certain college courses. Wofford's participation in two of the best-known programs, the Advanced Placement Program (AP) and the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), is described briefly below and in the chart here. Students may take tests in both programs if they wish, but because each of the two serves generally the same purpose, in any given subject area students should test in only one of the programs. Wofford may award a maximum total of twenty four semester hours of credit through such programs, including DANTES and military experience and schooling. For information and specific advice, students may consult the Wofford Registrar or their high school guidance counselors.

Advanced Placement Program (AP)
Qualified high school students are encouraged to take Advanced Placement courses and examinations. The chart which can be viewed here shows academic disciplines in which students’ Advanced Placement achievements are recognized. It also indicates acceptable scores, courses credited, and semester hours awarded on the basis of those scores.

International Baccalaureate (IB)
Wofford College offers placement and credit of up to 30 hours for the higher level IB examinations with scores of 5, 6, or 7. The chart which can be viewed here shows academic disciplines in which students’ International Baccalaureate achievements are recognized.  Prospective chemistry majors must, in addition, take a qualifying examination in order to receive credit. No credit is awarded for standard level courses.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
There are two categories of tests in this program: the General Examinations and the Subject Examinations. While Wofford does not award credit on the basis of the General Examinations, credit may be awarded for successful work on the Subject Examinations, provided they are taken before the student enrolls at Wofford College.  Qualifying scores are listed here.
