Mission and values

Mission

In a college committed “to excellence in character, performance, leadership, service to others and lifelong learning” (Wofford Mission), Wofford’s advising program supports and empowers students as they define and pursue curricular and co-curricular opportunities for self-direction and growth. Our goal is to teach through collaboration as students realize their potential within a liberal arts tradition of learning.

Values

Wofford’s General Education Advising program commits to these values for the good of both advisors and advisees in the overarching goal of empowering students for “extraordinary and positive contributions to society” (Wofford Mission):

  • Liberal arts education.
  • Advising as a teaching and learning process.
  • Inclusive respect for difference.

  • Knowledge—discovery, creation and application.
  • Shared and transferable knowledge.
  • Responsibility to partnership in mutually interdependent advising relationships.
  • Respect for student’s goals-setting, decision making and agency.
  • Individualized learning.
  • Creative collaboration.
  • Professionalism in communication and interaction.
  • Integrity and trustworthiness.
