Faculty and Staff

Advisor Responsibilities

Through education and collaboration, advisors should facilitate students’ understanding of and ability to progress through the college’s curriculum, degree requirements, policies and procedures. They should respect students’ goals and support their success by providing accurate information, referring students to resources, offering guidance, while respecting students’ individuality, agency and responsibility in their decision-making.

  • Be well-informed about requirements, deadlines, processes, resources and the general operation of the college
  • Complete responsibilities of informing and guiding students associated with registration and course enrollment
  • Refer students to resources useful in achieving their academic, personal and career goals
  • Respect students’ individual personal and cultural identities in offering guidance and suggesting resources.
  • Communicate clearly, with accuracy, with timeliness.
  • Comply with FERPA and college confidentiality requirements.
  • Seek support from college resources in developing an advising-as-teaching pedagogy.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities.

Resources for Advisors

Advising Handbook

An advising handbook is available for faculty to provide information and resources to assist them with advising responsibilities and serve as a reference for advising related questions. This information can be found on the General Education Advisor Moodle page.

Care Team Support

An interdisciplinary team across campus has created a Care Team. This work is part of the college’s investment in the holistic development of all students as they strive to reach their academic potential. Understanding that circumstances can disrupt a student’s academic progress, the team offers guidance, assessment and perhaps provide assistance to students who need collaborative support or resources during difficult circumstances. A Care Team Starfish flag is now an option for members of the community who learn of a student in crisis.
