Community Sustainability

Mission: Our Community Sustainability team aims to cultivate enduring, sustainable partnerships between Wofford College and the Spartanburg community through shared learning and brainstorming, building relationships, and developing and sustaining collaborative programs that support and empower local communities.

Outcomes: This course is designed to prepare students to build, facilitate and manage community-based programming in Spartanburg. Through a series of assignments, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Examine their own positionalities over time
  • Establish connections with local community members and organizations.
  • Define and give examples of Spartanburg’s community assets, needs and interests.
  • Formulate and articulate their own philosophies of “sustainability” and doing community-based work.
  • Develop community organizing and leadership skills.
  • Assess current community programming and brainstorm ways to contribute to efforts aimed at sustaining, improving and growing existing initiatives.

Whether your interests lie in education, healthcare, law, environmental sustainability, public policy, anthropology or community organizing, our Community Sustainability courses provide opportunities to connect classroom learning with meaningful community partnerships and real-world impact.
