James Henry Carlisle was born in Winnsboro, SC on May 4, 1825. Educated at South Carolina College, he taught in Columbia for a number of years before being elected to the original Wofford College faculty in 1853. Arriving in Spartanburg in 1854, Carlisle began an association with Wofford that lasted the rest of his life. Officially, he taught mathematics and astronomy, but in reality, he taught morals and leadership to future leaders in South Carolina’s small towns. He served as a member of South Carolina’s secession convention in 1860 and signed the ordinance of secession. Elected the college’s third president in 1875, Carlisle remained in that office until 1902. He chose not to move into the college president’s home, remaining in the campus home now called Carlisle-Wallace House. He was an active Methodist layman, serving as a delegate to General Conference in each year after lay representation was granted. He was also a noted speaker, and his papers give examples of some of his addresses. Click here for Carlisle's biography

Summary: These records consist largely of biographical material, along with some examples of President Carlisle’s writings. Other materials relate to some of his possessions now in the custody of the college, such as his octant, his portrait, his bust by Henri Bernhardt, his sundial, and his library. Several folders of memorial tributes and biographical sketches demonstrate his influence on alumni and on others in the state. Three boxes of pictures and photo albums of Carlisle and members of his family are in the collection, as are the daybooks and other materials of his grandson, James H. Carlisle III.
