Biographical note: Inez Brown Helms served for 21 years as a hostess and house mother at Wofford College. A native of Sumter and a graduate of Columbia College, she was a high school Latin teacher in Latta, SC, Manning, SC, and other South Carolina towns for sixteen years before coming to Wofford in 1933. Her husband, A. T. Helms, graduated from Wofford College in 1902 and was an educator. A school superintendent in Mullins and Manning, he died in 1923. From 1933 to 1954, with the exception of the 1943-44 school year when Wofford’s campus was used by the army, Mrs. Helms was a mentor and second mother to two generations of Wofford students. Upon her retirement in 1954, she moved to Sumter. She received the college’s Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1960, and died in Sumter on April 1, 1968.

Summary note: The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, cards, letters, photographs, and ephemera collected by Dr. John Younginer and presented to Mrs. Inez Helms, and materials later added by Mrs. Helms. The articles document the final year of service and retirement of Mrs. Helms as a house mother at Wofford College after some 21 years of service.
