iCAN

iCAN Spartanburg Brief History

iCAN (College Access Network) Spartanburg, trains and engages Wofford students as “near-peer college access mentors” to be matched one-on-one with Spartanburg County high school students in a mutually beneficial relationship. All high school students are enrolled in the Citizen Scholars Institute, Wofford’s partner in the venture. Mentors regularly communicate with their mentee to build life-long bonds and provide advice regarding the college admissions process and various aspects of college life.

The program officially began in February 2018 and welcomed its inaugural group totaling 21 high school juniors and sophomores. The program continues to serve Citizen Scholars and other local students.

The inaugural iCAN Spartanburg Summer Institute was held at Wofford College June 9-11, 2019. This residential experience will feature specific workshops on college-readiness skills and other aspects of college life. Additionally, mentees will have be exposed to a mock psychology lecture and lab course. Since then, iCAN has continued to host this event annually and have collaborated with student groups and additional Wofford faculty/staff.
