The Class of 2029 moved in Aug. 23. Joining the community were 450 first-year students, who hail from 26 states and seven countries, as well as 37 transfer students.
“This year’s incoming class was selected from our largest and most competitive applicant pool in the college’s 171-year history,” says Megan Tyler ’14, interim vice president for enrollment. “Each student brings a unique perspective to our campus community, and we are proud to call them Terriers.”
Here is an overview of the Class of 2029:
- The class has 124 legacy students, which means they are following a family member to Wofford.
- Student-athletes total 128 students.
- There are 87 Pell Grant recipients.
- The class has 71 first-generation college students.
- There are 43 Palmetto Fellows.
- Six have a parent who works at Wofford.
- They hail from as far away as Finland to as close as two miles from Wofford’s campus.
Their high school accomplishments:
- The class average high school GPA is well over a 4.0, with the Wofford recalculated GPA at 3.67.
- 179 were team captains.
- 55 were club presidents.
- Nine were editors of high school publications.
- 17 received Gold and Eagle Scout awards.
- 11 were student body presidents.
- Seven were valedictorians or salutatorians.
- There are multiple AP Scholars with Distinction.
- Members of the class brought home state championships in mock trial, tennis, dance, lacrosse, softball, basketball, football and soccer.
Fun facts about the class:
- One was a marching band section leader who performed in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day.
- There are two third-generation Wofford students.
- One caught 20 fish in one day while on a trip to Colorado.
- Another student hiked the Grand Canyon.
- A student raised $283,000 for Blood Cancer United.
- Several are scuba certified.
- One has attended every Wofford home football and men’s basketball game since she was born.
- One student completed a 100-mile bike ride, navigating four flat tires along the way, including a 15-mile stretch on a flat.
- Another attended a wedding in London at Kensington Palace.
- A student played soccer all four years of high school and never won a game.
- One is fluent in three languages.
- A student worked three part-time jobs before attending Wofford.
- One ran over 2,000 miles in their senior year.
- A student sold $7,000 worth of boots in a single day.
- One signed with an international modeling agency.
- Two students sang at their high school graduations.
- One played over 1,000 rounds of Mario Kart with her younger brother.
- One student ran a book drive that collected over 1,000 books.
- Another is working on building an online ACL rehab course.
- A student learned over 30 line dances this year.
- There is a student who blew all their money on golf clubs, while another saved a stray cat while golfing and named him Bogey.
- Another completed a black diamond snowboarding run this year.
- One student published a children’s book, while another student is in the process of publishing a poetry book.
- One earned their U.S. Coast Guard license.
- A student celebrated an important milestone recently, being cancer free for one year.
“For the Class of 2029, Wofford is no longer just a place toured during the college search process. It’s now their community, and over the next four years, they’re going to leave their fingerprints all over it,” says Tyler.
“The decision to join the Wofford community is not simply a choice that lasts four years. It’s a lifetime commitment. … Wherever life takes the Class of 2029, Wofford will be there.”
