1949
Dr. Bernard Ray Fitzgerald, Feb. 22, 2018, Charlotte, N.C. A retired United Methodist minister, Fitzgerald served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the Fleet Air Wing in the South Atlantic and aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. He was awarded three battle stars.
Raymond Elmer “Tex” Neuse Sr., April 17, 2018, Spartanburg, S.C. Neuse was a gunnery sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, flying seven successful missions during World War II. He retired from Spartan Mills in 1988 and went on to work in security at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind.
1955
Dr. Curtis Porter Bell, Feb. 24, 2018, Spartanburg, S.C. Bell joined the Wofford faculty in 1963 and served as professor of mathematics for 36 years, until his retirement in 1999. Bell was inducted into Wofford’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter as a student and served as its president and secretary as a member of the faculty. Memorials may be made to Wofford College.
The Rev. William Murray Gibbons, April 1, 2018, Turbeville, S.C. Gibbons served United Methodist churches in South Carolina and California before retiring in 1999. He was the founder of Trinity United Methodist Church in Conway, S.C.
1957
Dr. Laurie Nelson Ervin Jr., April 24, 2018, Mount Pleasant, S.C. Ervin was on the Wofford golf team and a member of Moyers Men Glee Club. He also was vice president of Kappa Alpha Order. Ervin went on to a fulfilling career as a surgeon in Greenville, S.C. He was involved with the American Cancer Society, representing South Carolina at the International Cancer Congress, and the Greenville County Blood Connection. Ervin was an active member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Dr. Laurie N. and Jennie D. Ervin Scholarship Fund at Wofford.
1958
Samuel Asbury George Jr., March 5, 2018, Savannah, Ga. George enjoyed an active life — racing cars, climbing telephone poles and later managing Citizens Telephone Co., traveling the world, developing patented technology, commanding a S.C. Army National Guard battalion, and owning and managing a restaurant. Memorials may be made to the Sam A. George Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund at Wofford.
1959
James Michael Cox, April 19, 2018, Shreveport, La. Cox served in the U.S. Air Force for 27 years, specializing in nuclear weapons management. A decorated veteran, Cox was active after retirement with the Department of Louisiana Disabled American Veterans, the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home and the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center.

Bobby Mayton Bowen, March 17, 2018, Clarkesville, Ga. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Bowen was a teacher and football coach early in his career. He joined the U.S. Office of Education and retired as the training officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 4 in Atlanta, Ga.
The Rev. James Boyd Chewning, Nov. 2, 2017, Orangeburg, S.C. Chewning served churches in South Carolina for 43 years. Upon his retirement, he volunteered at The Oaks, a United Methodist community, and was a member of the Lions, Civitan and Rotary clubs.
1962
Lloyd Charles Merritt Jr., Feb. 14, 2018, Charleston, S.C. A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Wofford, Merritt was the owner and CEO of Merritt Veterinary Supplies Inc. He served on the board of the Sumter YMCA and was a member of St. Philip’s Church of Charleston. Memorials may be made to the Merritt Family Endowed Scholarship Fund at Wofford.
1963
Pierce Watson “Pete” Cantey Jr., May 1, 2018, Camden, S.C. Cantey was a CPA in the firm of Cantey, Tiller, Pierce and Green for 52 years. He loved his work and was an avid and accomplished golfer. He was active in Grace Episcopal Church and the community, serving on the board of Kershaw County Hospital and the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County.
James Buxton “Buck” Terry, Feb. 13, 2018, Columbia, S.C. A member of Kappa Alpha Order at Wofford, Terry served in the U.S. Navy for four years before going into banking. In addition to 30 years in banking, he served 12 years as a commissioner appointed by the governor to the S.C. Department of Mental Health.
1964
Joel Eugene “Joe” Campbell, April 9, 2018, Laurinburg, N.C. A member of ROTC at Wofford, Campbell served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He retired as the personnel director for Highpoint Furniture. He enjoyed collecting antiques, golfing and playing softball.
John Alexander O’Daniel, Jan. 30, 2018, Jacksonville, Fla. O’Daniel was a worldwide top 10 manufactured home dealer with Fleetwood Enterprises. After retirement he mentored individuals enrolled in Jacksonville City Rescue Mission’s LifeBuilders program and assisted the homeless at Mission House. He also graduated from the Jax Beach Civilian Police Academy.
Dr. Walter Collins Robinson III, Feb. 9, 2018, Taylors, S.C. Robinson was the first veterinarian in South Carolina to complete a small animal surgical residency and then return to South Carolina to provide advanced surgical procedures to companion animals. He served as vice chairman of the S.C. State Election Commission. For his service, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto. Robinson died in an automobile accident.

James Joseph “Jim” McAndrew II, Feb. 15, 2018, Charleston, S.C. McAndrew began his career with Milliken and Co., eventually retiring from Bunzl. He loved golf and was a senior champion at Shadowmoss Country Club.
Hugo Sheridan Sims III, March 23, 2018, Orangeburg, S.C. Sims’ career first took him to Chicago, where he practiced antitrust law with the Department of Justice before returning home to work with his father, eventually starting Sims Realty with his brother. He worked for many years as a guardian ad litem.
1967
Lawrence Coffield Stallcup, March 26, 2018, Greenville, S.C. Stallcup was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a board member of Communities in Schools for six years. He was an avid golfer and had eight hole-in-ones during his career.
1968
William Carroll Foster Jr., April 24, 2018, Spartanburg, S.C. Foster was a Vietnam veteran. He became a teacher, then worked for 32 years at the Mental Health Center of East Central Georgia. After retiring as director of developmental disabilities, he served as director of the Berry Center and board president of St. Stephens Ministries.

Roger Clynton Collins, Feb. 16, 2018, Fort Valley, Ga. Collins spent his career in the food industry, retiring from Interstate Dairy Queen in 2013. He loved the outdoors, his dog and traveling.
1972
Ronald Van Patterson, April 4, 2018, Green Creek, N.C. Patterson was ordained as a minister of spiritual science in 1994 and founded Lumen Photon Therapy in 2000. He was a pioneer in the light therapy field.
1975
James Power Rogers, April 3, 2018, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Rogers went on to enjoy a career as a special agent with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
1988
James Harvey “Tweety” Hylton Jr., April 28, 2018, Inman, S.C. Hylton taught school briefly before working in professional racing with Hylton Engineering Enterprises. Hylton and his father were killed in an automobile accident returning from the ARCA race at Talladega Speedway.
2018
Peter Jacob Harbert, May 9, 2018, Charleston, S.C. A beloved member of the Wofford community, Harbert was an honor graduate who spoke five languages — Arabic, English, French, German and Spanish. A French and international affairs major, he did internships with the Morocco News and with the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation and served as an assistant in the Office of Residence Life at Wofford. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Robert Alan Foos Sr., May 7, 2018, Chesnee, S.C. Foos was a grounds manager at Wofford before his stroke. He also was an active member of Stateline Baptist Church.
