Chikayo Kawagishi: Traditional Japanese Dolls, Martha Cloud Chapman Gallery
The exhibit runs through Jan. 15 and closes with an artist talk and reception from 5-7 p.m., that evening
Kawagishi, a Japanese artist, studied doll-making in Nara and has been a craft teacher for more than 20 years. She has exhibited her dolls since 1998 and received various awards at doll-making festivals, including a grand prize in the Verde Doll Festival in 2009. The exhibition at Wofford displays the Fox Wedding, a traditional story in the Asian world; dolls representing the animals of the Japanese zodiac; and other traditional dolls, created also with the assistance of Fumiko Hanaya, a friend and student of the artist.

Ruins in Rebirth: Photography of Glendale Shoals, Sandor Teszler Library Gallery, opening reception on Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
Discover Glendale through the eyes of Wofford student photographers. Once a textile town and industrial hub, Glendale is now home to Wofford’s Goodall Environmental Studies Center. This photography exhibit is designed to showcase the history, natural beauty and progressive future of the area. The exhibit runs through Friday, Feb. 27.

The Burka Avenger: A Case Study on Politics, Identity and Female Muslim Agency in Pakistan, Gray-Jones Room, Burwell Building
Burka Avenger is a multi-award winning Pakistani animated television series created and directed by famous Pakistani rock star and social activist, Aaron Haroon Rashid (AKA Haroon). Guest speaker Kim Fox will first discuss the socio-cultural context of the series by highlighting recent trends in Pakistani politics, society, literature and comics. This foundation will help one see how the three overarching Qur’anic concepts portrayed by the series’ main character, Jiya, whose alter ego is the Burka Avenger, are evocative of a liberational Islam. A discussion will follow Burka Avenger Episodes I & II. Presented by the Muslim Student Association & Global Media Studies Interim.

Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans.
