SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A variety of concerts and end-of-the-academic-year activities highlight the May calendar at Wofford College.

Sunday, May 3
Hammock-a-thon at Glendale Shoals
11 a.m.-2 p.m., Glendale Shoals
Wofford’s Environmental Studies Program will host the second annual Hammock-a-thon Sunday at Glendale. The event is free and open to the public. Local band Bearcastle Plantation will provide live music. Other activities include free hot dogs on the grill, a kids’ activity table, and the Local Hiker will be selling hammocks and other fun outdoors gear. This is the last Glendale Shoals event of the academic year.

Monday, May 4
Wofford Band, Strings Ensemble and Chamber Players Concert
7-9 p.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building
The Wofford Band, Strings Ensemble, Chamber Players and Concert Band will hold their annual Spring Concert, which is free and open to the public. Concert Band selections will include a suite by Gustav Holst, an alto saxophone solo by Tyler Tickle, a tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein, and a rousing “hats off” to Bond… James Bond. The Strings Ensemble will perform Mozart String Quartet, Pachelbel’s Canon and Gigue, Sibelius “Valse Triste” and Strauss Waltz. The Chamber Players will feature pianists Ivory Zhang and Marcus Ellison performing Chopin Prelude in E minor, Beethoven’s “Waldstein” Sonata and a piano duet arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz from Sleeping Beauty.” In addition, the Chamber Players also will feature violinists Boyd Richardson and Kristo Limmogianis, accompanied by Marcus Ellison on piano, in Mozart’s supreme slow movement from the “Sinfonie Concertante in E flat.” Strings seniors Carol Sadek, violinist, and Stephanie Vlandis, cellist, will be joined by Dr. Eun-Sun Lee, violinist, director of Wofford String Ensemble and Wofford Chamber Players, in the “Final Farewell” piece, Dvorak’s Two Bagatelles.

Tuesday, May 5
Troubadour Guitar Series: Sweden’s Celia Linde
7-9 p.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building
Celia Linde tours frequently throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Finland, Scandinavia, Russia and Turkey. She is often the featured artist on National Swedish Radio-Television and also has been profiled on the BBC, Denmark’s Radio, Turkish Radio-Television (TRT) and as well as New York’s WNYC and other international radio stations. Her concert at Wofford will be free and open to the public.

Honors Convocation
11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building
Wofford College will present academic awards and other recognitions to students at the annual Honors Convocation. The new Presidential International Scholar also will be announced.

Artist Talk & Reception for Studio Art Senior Capstones featuring Kaylea Bollinger, Victoria DaSilva and Katie Harmon
2-3:30 p.m., Campus Life Building
Studio Art senior students Kaylea Bollinger, Victoria DaSilva and Katie Harmon will present artist talks about their works at a reception for their exhibition. Their works will be on display in the Campus Life Building through May 18.

Artist Talk & Reception for Studio Art Senior Capstones featuring Sarah Baldwin, Mills Brown and Carter Tindall

Studio Art senior students Sarah Baldwin, Mills Brown and Carter Tindall will present artist talks about their works at a reception for their exhibition. Their works will be on display at Hub-Bub Showroom through May 28.

New members of Phi Beta Kappa will be initiated at this event. Wofford is home to one of the nation’s 283 Phi Beta Kappa chapters.

Groundbreaking for the Rosalind S. Richardson Center for the Arts
11:15 a.m., Fraternity Row
Ground will be broken for the Rosalind S. Richardson Center for the Arts, which will house programs for theatre and visual arts. The 54,500-square-foot building will include a 300-seat performance hall, an art museum, student gallery, black box theater and studios for acting, costume design, painting, mixed media and ceramics. It also will hold classrooms and faculty offices.

Southern Guards Battalion Spring Commissioning Ceremony
2 p.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building
Guest speaker will be Major General Glenn A. Bramhall, assigned as the Commander, 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command and subordinate units.

Saturday, May 16
Baccalaureate Service
5-6 p.m., Lawn of Main Building
Perkins-Prothro Chaplain Ron Robinson will lead this annual service during Commencement Weekend. The rain location will be Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Sunday, May 17
Commencement Exercises
9:30 a.m., Lawn of Main Building
NBC national correspondent Craig Melvin, a 2001 Wofford graduate, will be the featured speaker at Commencement Exercises, where some 390 graduates will receive their degrees. Wofford also will present honorary degrees to alumnus Henry C. Giles Jr. and Hugh Lane Jr. The rain location will be Benjamin Johnson Arena.
