LGBTQIA Life

The Office for Civil Rights, Compliance and Community Initiatives, in collaboration with numerous campus and community partners, supports ongoing programs and initiatives that celebrate and support the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex and asexual-identified individuals. Wofford resources

LGBTerriers:

Wofford’s student organization for LGBTQIA-identified students and their allies, LGBTerriers hosts meetings and programs throughout the academic year. Visit the organization at the fall semester interest fair to sign up for emails and updates.

Ally training:

Wofford has offered LGBTQIA ally training since 2012. These training sessions educate students, faculty and staff on issues facing LGBTQIA-identified individuals and provide valuable next-steps on ways to be more inclusive and affirming of the LGBTQIA community. During the 2017-18 academic year, more than 40 faculty and staff members participated in ally training. To schedule a training session, contact the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Pride Month:

Wofford annually observes Pride Month in April. Events have included an LGBTQIA alumni panel and reception, an LGBTQIA Ally Training for Wofford faculty and staff led by experts, community conversations on the queer experience at Wofford and much more.

Office of Residence Life:

All Wofford resident assistants (RAs) participate in LGBTQIA ally training. The Office of Residence Life also has specific policies for students who identify as transgender regarding affirming housing options. For housing options, contact the Office of Residence Life at reslife@wofford.edu.

All-Gender Restrooms:

In 2020, Wofford designated 17 all-gender restrooms on campus. These facilities are single-user spaces that lock from the inside and are open to anyone. Each lockable space includes a toilet and sink. Each all-gender restroom is marked clearly with signage.

No Wofford community member or guest should feel unsafe when using a restroom. If you observe threatening or suspicious behavior, or notice a safety hazard, please contact Campus Safety at 864-597-4911. Additionally, please complete a Discrimination and Harassment Reporting Form if you experience or witness any “gender policing” or harassment in relation to an individual using an all-gender restroom.

Community resources

Upstate Pride:

Upstate Pride is a non-profit organization founded in Spartanburg to empower people of all sexualities and genders in the 10-county Upstate South Carolina region. The group hosts various educational and social programs, including the annual Pride March and Celebration in Barnet Park in downtown Spartanburg.

SC Equality:

SC Equality works to advance the civil and human rights of LGBTQIA-identified South Carolinians and their families.

Gender Benders:

Gender Benders is a grassroots organization for transgender/gender-diverse individuals across the Southeast.

Piedmont Care:

Located in downtown Spartanburg, Piedmont Care is an educational and advocacy organization dedicated to the prevention of HIV/AIDS. It offers free and confidential rapid-response HIV screenings and other services.
