About The Space to: Consult

Consultants help an organization solve a problem or meet a goal by conducting research and creating solutions. Participating in a consulting project will help you develop skills in research, idea generation, problem-framing, design thinking, project management and communication. It’s excellent resumé experience that also provides networking opportunities and a chance for an in-depth examination of a specific organization or industry.

The Space to: Consult is an excellent way to fill the space between the theoretical and the practical

Who Should Participate

  • The Space to: Consult is for students (all majors are welcome) who want to get consulting experience, but who may not be able to devote four weeks to our summer Institute.
  • It's also for former Institute students who have already completed a consulting project, but would like additional practice.
How It Works:

Our educational approach is the same during the academic year as it is during the summer Institute: you’ll work with a group of your peers to solve a problem for a business in a predetermined length of time (typically a few weeks or months). You’ll be guided by The Space team every step of the way, but the work will be your own. Projects are typically 4 to 6 weeks long and require 5 to 15 hours per week from each consultant.

Each assignment begins with a client meeting to determine scope and objectives. From this initial meeting, consultants develop a project plan that details milestones, deliverables and timeframes. Several times during the project, consultants and clients meet in person or via conference call to discuss progress and make adjustments as necessary. The final deliverable is presented in person, typically at the client's site.
