Theatre Workshop
It began in the early 1970s when Dr. J. R. Gross decided to offer a January Interim that would show students how playwrights express ideas through drama. Almost overnight, there was a popular Wofford Theatre Workshop operating in an old dining hall. In the 1980s, the versatile, fully-equipped Tony White Theater was included in the Campus Life Building. Student actors, stage managers, writers and directors have come and gone, but Wofford theatre under Dr. Gross's dedicated leadership always has been entertaining, creative, and provocative.
Theatre alumni have become involved on the professional and community theatre levels; in arts management; or in further academic study in the field. Still others have become physicians, attorneys, and executives who claim that their theatre experience helped them build valuable communications skills.
In fall 2003, Wofford launched the theatre major, strengthening the college's academic offerings, and Dr. Mark Ferguson '96 joined the faculty as assistant professor and director of Wofford Theatre. Students interested in theatre can therefore major in theatre, and/or participate in productions. Students may also become a member of Alpha Psi Omega honorary drama fraternity.
