A Clinic in Malawi
Success Initiative students change the world through project work. In spring of 2009, Achini Bandara ('09) oversaw what few people do: her dream becoming reality. During a trip to Malawi years before, she realized that there was a lack of adequate healthcare in the village she visited. The local medical clinic was open-air and unsanitary. Instead of returning home and brushing it off, she decided to take action. Achini began a campaign and raised $11,145 to fund the completion of a medical clinic in the village, no small feat for a college student! The money she raised went toward the clinic's roof, wiring, painting, flooring, plumbing, and plastering - everything but the walls themselves! In the spring of 2009, she returned to Malawi to oversee construction of the clinic, proudly watching her dream taking shape. Later in the spring, Achini won the presigious Sullivan Award for her involvement. To read about Achini's recognition, click here!
