Jamie Wilson ('09)
Jamie is one of those students who always wears a smile, no matter what the situation. Her pleasant demeanor and positive attitude have been a welcome addition to SI and to the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, where she spent the last year working with students. Jamie realized a love of dance and music among the older boys and saw their need for involvement. In response, she began a step team. She encouraged her students to work together and have fun. Eventually, these young men were completing complex step routines and developing pride in themselves and the team. In the fall, Jamie will be teaching low-income children in Louisiana through the Teach for America program. She is one of two SI students to receive this commission, the other being Nathan Madigan ('08), who is teaching in New Jersey. Teach for America counteracts injustice in the educational system by sending qualified, energetic teachers to low-income areas. The teachers are usually recent college graduates who bring with them their passion for learning. Jamie certainly has a passion for education, a love of students, and an encouraging way. We in SI are proud of her and wish her all the best as she shares her passion with the world!
