South Carolina Student Legislature

scsl2

The South Carolina Student Legislature (SCSL) is a student-run mock legislature sponsored by the SC General Assembly. Colleges and universities in the State of South Carolina send delegations to two annual sessions to debate bills and further their knowledge about parliamentary procedure and state government.

Since 1956, SCSL has been a breeding ground for future newsmakers. Among the organization's former delegates are South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster, former Republican strategist Lee Atwater, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army and former SCGOP party chair Van Hipp, former Secretary of State candidate Rick Wade, and Wofford professor, Dr. Olin Sansbury.scsl1

South Carolina Student Legislature was founded by students and is run solely by students. We aim to educate South Carolina's students about the functions of democratic government and to provide a forum for student debate on public policy issues. In fulfillment of this mission, South Carolina Student Legislature seeks the active participation of all institutions of higher education in South Carolina.  In addition to Wofford, active delegations include The University of South Carolina, Clemson University, The Citadel, Coastal Carolina University, Charleston Southern University, The College of Charleston, Converse College, North Greenville University, Morris College and Furman University.

This is a great experience for students of all majors.  Wofford sends 12 delegates to session each semester.  Fall session is held at the State House in Columbia.  Spring Session is traditionally held in Myrtle Beach.  There are generally two on campus meetings per semester.

SCSL is funded by Wofford's Public Policy Committee and Campus Union.

Please contact delegation chair, Paige Hallen (hallencp@wofford.edu), or vice chair, Brent Troxell (troxellbd@wofford.edu), for more information.
