Senior Circuit...Frances GlennSome students have a good idea early on where they are going to go to college. Some, like Frances Glenn of Columbia, S.C., go through several months of deliberation. Thankfully, she chose Wofford.
“I chose to come to Wofford after a somewhat difficult time deciding what school was best for me,” she recalls. “I had applied to many schools that ranged from small liberal arts schools to large public universities. While I thankfully had many options, I chose Wofford because it provided an environment unlike anything I had experienced before, and yet at the same time it was very comfortable.
“Because I had attended large public schools previously, I did not know many of the perks of going to such a small and close knit school. When I came to tour Wofford in the Spring of 2005, there was no doubt that the students that were on campus loved the school and really felt that they were in the right place. Because of my brief glimpse of Wofford life I was ultimately able to make my college decision with confidence.”
Her confidence has grown over the past four years, as witnessed by her extensive involvement in the campus community.
“I’m a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and have served many roles while in my sorority,” she says. “As a freshman, I was the philanthropy and Girl Scouts chairman. As a sophomore, I served as an SET leader, which is a member of our sorority that helps the new members learn about our sorority and also become acclimated to sorority life. In my junior year, I served as KD's vice president of member education, where I organized the new member activities and also helped the SET leaders teach the new members about our sorority. Finally, this year I have served as my sorority's president.
“Because I have constantly had a job within my sorority, much of the time that wasn’t spent studying went to that position and unfortunately did not leave me with much more for anything else. However, during some semesters I was able to volunteer at a local homeless shelter, as well as work as an aid in a daycare class room. I am currently working part time in a local boutique, The Runway on Main Street.”
Academically, she has been able to stick with her first major choice.
“I am a biology major and a religion minor,” says Glenn. “I have considered changing my major a couple of times, but I have never followed through with it because at the end of the day I really enjoy biology and see myself with a career in it in some shape or fashion. While I think being a student has its really frustrating moments, and sometimes you even feel like you don't belong in a certain program, it is important to do what you enjoy, and biology has always been interesting to me. It has also been something that I have needed to work hard at to succeed.
“My religion classes have provided a great balance for me. I feel that religion and biology are both so different that studying for one provides a good break from the other.”
Glenn approaches her career decision the same way she approached her college decision…cautiously.
“I would love to know what the future holds for me, but then that would take the fun out of life, right?” she says. “I am going to apply to nursing school but may not follow through with that idea. I hope to put in hours in a hospital just to be in the environment. I have so many interests right now, ranging from cooking to nursing, that I really am having a hard time focusing on just one thing. I’m looking forward to the near future because I think it will provide the time that I need to help me determine what I would like to do as a career.”
