Senior Circuit...Matt Nimmich

Matt Nimmich hails from Sumter, S.C., about 30 miles due east of Columbia. Wofford wasn’t in the immediate vicinity, but it was a household name thanks to Matt’s brother Mitchell, who graduated from here in 2005.

nimm200“I chose to come to Wofford for the same reasons Mitchell did, because of the small class sizes and the low student-to-teacher ratio,” says Nimmich. “The classes here were not much larger than my classes in high school (Wilson Hall, a small SCISA private school in Sumter), so it was an easy transition to college life. At Wofford you’re not just a number in some huge auditorium. Your professors actually get to know you.”

Nimmich, meanwhile, took it upon himself to get to know other students.

“I’ve been pretty involved at Wofford,” he says. “I was in the Residential Peer Mentor program during my sophomore and junior years. I’ve also been in the Pre-Dental Society since my freshman year. I’m on the Wofford Shooting Sports Team, which is a competitive trap and skeet-shooting club we started my sophomore year. I also love to wakeboard and slalom and was a member of the Wofford Wake Riders. Aside from these clubs, I’ve also been involved in the Student Alumni Association, IMPACT Wofford, the Newman Club, and Whitewater Terriers.”

Then there is his academic side, which isn’t as diverse but takes up just as much of his time.

“I’m a pre-dental biology major,” says Nimmich. “The biology department at Wofford is great! It was actually another one of the reasons I came to Wofford. The biology professors (as well as the other professors) truly care about the success of their students. They have all been very helpful, from answering questions after class to helping me apply to Dental School.”

Speaking of that, he is already on course to continue his studies down I-26.

“I was accepted to the MUSC’s College of Dental Medicine in December so I’ll be heading to Charleston after graduation,” Nimmich says. “We start on June 1st so I’ll only get two weeks off between graduation and Dental School. I’m so excited. I can’t wait to get down to Charleston!”

With his post-Wofford plans already in full gear, Nimmich reflected on his best memory over the past four years.

“I went SCUBA diving in Little Cayman for Interim my sophomore year,” he says. “It was awesome! We went on three or four dives everyday. Spending a month learning how to SCUBA dive and then spending eight days diving in the Caribbean was a pretty awesome way to spend my Interim.”
