Senior Circuit...Matt LowMatt Low was the reluctant Terrier. For starters, he grew up in Lexington, S.C., in the extended shadow of the University of South Carolina.
“I had always wanted to go to USC because my mom went there and it wasn't that far away,” says Low. “A surgeon that my mom worked with told me I should visit Wofford because that is where he went to college and because it was such a great school. I eventually agreed to visit, and after I set one foot on the campus I knew this was where I wanted to go. It was perfect -- everything I was looking for in a college.”
Low has certainly gotten the most out of his college experience. He’s been involved in ultimate Frisbee, residence life, foreign language multimedia lab crew, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, tutoring, volunteering at Arcadia Elementary, studying abroad in Bolivia (he just got back), and Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish Honor Society. Oh, and did he mention he was also a yearbook photographer? His academic life has been robust as well.
“I am a biology and Spanish major,” he says. “I knew coming in to Wofford that I wanted to be a doctor, and that has never changed. I also loved Spanish and always wanted to be able to speak the language. I decided to just combined them both and see where that could lead me.”
Hopefully, it will lead him to med school. He has his eyes set on MUSC in Charleston, and hopes to pursue cardiothoracic surgery. Looking back, he says his best memory at Wofford involved something that went awry but ended up introducing him to new friends in the process.
“One of the memories that stand out the most to me was during my freshman year, when someone pulled a water fountain off the wall on the second floor of Marsh,” says Low. “Water flooded the hallway for about 30 minutes before we could get it turned off.
“It wasn't so great at the time, but thinking back on it, the whole clean up process really brought me closer to many of my new friends. There were about 20 of us who just used towels and everything we could to soak up all the water and take it outside. It was great bonding experience and it really helped me to create lasting friendships that I value so much today.”
