Senior Circuit...Valerie Douglas

Valerie Douglas grew up about 15 miles west of Wofford in Lyman, S.C. She decided to attend Wofford because of the way both the campus and the people made her feel.

vdoug200“On each visit, I felt right at home,” she says. “I could see myself making friends, enjoying experiences, and growing as an individual. And after almost 4 years, I can say that I have accomplished all of it.”

The list of activities and organizations is long: residence life, RPM, sports marketing, Student Alumni Association, Teacher Education Student Association, Relay for Life and Colleges Against Cancer, Blue Key Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta, and Wofford Ambassador.

“I guess you could call me a busy bee,” she laughs. “I have enjoyed the experiences as a resident advisor because I have made many friends and strengthened my communication and leadership skills. Each organization has allowed me to be more a part of the Wofford community.”

When asked to come up with one memory that stands out above the others, Douglas struggled.

“The moments that I will always remember are lunch dates with my friends,” she says. “Almost every day I have been able to eat lunch with the wonderful people who have touched my lives. During the break from classes, we sat and talked, laughed, vented about our troubles, and just enjoyed life. I pray that I never forget these times.”

The English major has a concentration in education for secondary school. Douglas has a pretty well planned out future beyond the ever-nearing graduation.

“I plan to have a laid-back summer,” she says. “I will be blessed to attend a number of friends' weddings and to go on many beach trips.

“For the following two years, I will be attending graduate school for a Masters degree in early childhood education. After that, I would like to teach first grade and work on my Ph. D. in educational administration.

“Later in life, I want to become a principal of a school and a superintendent of a school district. Who knows, maybe even the State Superintendent of South Carolina. In the end, I am just like everyone else. I want to have a happy family and a successful career.”
