Senior Circuit: Haskins HowertonHaskins Howerton is from Asheville, N.C. In pursuit of higher education, he made the trek down I-26 to Spartanburg, S.C., for two reasons. One, his grandfather worked at Wofford for 30 years. The other had to do with a white and black spherical object.

“Because of my grandfather I was very familiar with the campus and the athletics, and knew that it was a good place to be,” said Howerton. “Also, Wofford was the only Division I school to ask me to play soccer. I love soccer, and during high school I decided that I wanted to play Division I. Wofford ended up being the place. I also knew the academics were great, so it seemed like an all around good place to be.”
Howerton has played soccer for four years. He also has been a member of Success Initiative, and that involvement has steered his academics in another direction.
“My current major is business finance,” says Howerton. “I came to Wofford wanting to go to dental school. After talking to Dr. (Jim) Proctor, who was then the head of Success Initiative, I reevaluated what I wanted to do and thought that a degree in finance would give me a broader choice of careers once I graduated. I have always liked construction and I think that finance will help me the most in that field after I graduate.
“Right now I am not sure what I want to do yet in that regard. I would like to eventually get into a masters program for construction science and management at either Clemson or Western Carolina, but I think taking a year off in between would be nice.”
Until then, he hopes to add to the memories he already has accumulated at Wofford.
“One of my favorite memories occurred my freshman year during spring weekend,” he says. “One of the soccer players was the DJ and everyone was hanging out next to the gravel lot. We had a set of horse shoes out and everyone was just having a good time. Even though spring weekend is great every year, that one sticks out in my mind.”
