Senior Circuit: Blair WaddellBlair Waddell hails from the home of Little Debbie snack cakes, Moonpies, and a pretty famous Choo Choo. Her brother Blake attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn, and she wanted an identity of her own. So why did she leave Chattanooga, Tenn., for Wofford?
“I came from a
private high school with small classes and an intimate setting, and knew that I wanted the same community feeling from my college. Blake went to Memphis, so I went the other direction, four or five hours away depending on Atlanta traffic. When I got to the (Wofford) campus, it was one of those moments where I just looked at my mom and said ‘This is it.’ For me, it was a feeling that I needed to be here, and thankfully, it has been the perfect fit.”
Has it ever. Waddell has taken to Wofford (and vice versa) from Day One. She joined Zeta Tau Alpha as a freshman, and just recently handed over her role as president to another sister. She also has been involved with WAC (Wofford Activities Council), Wofford Ambassadors, Wofford’s Orientation Staff, and Order of Omega.
Academically, she knew what she wanted early and has stayed the course.
“I’m a government major and philosophy minor,” she says. “I’ve always loved politics and been intrigued about the ways in which the American government and foreign institutions work, so I knew coming in that it would probably be my major. It’s definitely been a great experience.
“It wasn’t until last year that I decided to get a philosophy minor, but after having some great classes with wonderful professors, I couldn’t imagine spending my extra hours anywhere else.”
With graduation on the horizon, Waddell couldn’t imagine having gone to college anywhere other than Wofford. She says the memories are too plentiful to pick out one that stands alone.
“Every day here is some kind of memory,” she says. “Whether it’s cooking dinner in the apartments with my roommates or just having coffee in the Milliken Café, they’re all memories that I will keep with me after I graduate. I have met some amazing people here and have friends that will last a lifetime, and I have grown into a stronger person here, ready to go out and conquer the world.”
What will be the first step?
“I’m not sure what the future holds,” says Waddell. “As of right now, I am looking to get a job in public relations working charity events, marketing, and possibly helping in campaign strategies. Hopefully, one day I will have a political career of my own.”
