Senior Circuit: Emily Dengler

Senior Emily Dengler didn’t hear much about Wofford College growing up in Johnson City, Tenn., but when she did a little research she found it to be everything she was seeking.

dengler200“I chose to attend Wofford because I loved the campus and the entire atmosphere,” she says. “When I visited, I could tell immediately that it is a close-knit community. The class sizes are small, allowing the professors to get to know the students on an individual basis.

“I knew that I wanted to go to medical school, and that the science courses here would prepare me well, but I also wanted the option of classes outside the sciences. I just knew that I would get the kind of education I was looking for here.”

Her major has been the same from the beginning - psychology with a concentration in neuroscience.

“People sometimes wonder why I didn’t major in biology or chemistry since I’m trying to go to medical school,” says Dengler. “I just wanted to do something a little different. I took an Intro to Psychology class at the beginning of my freshman year and thought it was really interesting. I thought that it would prepare me really well for the relational aspect of medicine.”

It’s a common theme for Dengler, who has established relations with several causes and organizations during her time here.

She’s been a member of the Psychology Kingdom. She’s also done Math Academy since last fall, where she and other students went to Cleveland Elementary one afternoon per week to help teach math skills to fifth and sixth graders. And off campus, she has been a leader at Young Life, a high school Christian ministry here in Spartanburg.

Her favorite memory at Wofford was a scuba diving Interim class her sophomore year. She and her classmates trained in Spartanburg, then went to Little Cayman for a week.

“Scuba diving was something I always wanted to do but never thought I would get a chance to do,” says Dengler. “It’s one of those experiences that I will remember for the rest of my life, and I highly encourage everyone to try.”

As for the future, she describes it as “tentative.”

“I’m in the process of applying to medical school for next fall,” she says. “I plan on going to med school in Tennessee. If that doesn’t work out, then I’m probably going to do research and work for a year and apply again the following year.”
