Senior Circuit: Claire Burke

Claire Burke split her pre-college years between Atlanta, Ga., and Williamsburg, Va. When it came time to pick a college, she decided to split the difference.

burke200“I wanted to get back down South,” she says. “I had never heard of Wofford before it was suggested to me by my high school counselor. I wasn’t necessarily looking for a small school, but it happened to be the right one for me.”

Choosing a college was relatively easy. Choosing a major? Not so much.

“I think I might have wanted to be every single major at one time or another, from Spanish to psychology, here at Wofford,” says Burke, whose current major is English with a minor in business. “Whatever major I wanted to be was centered around sports. Whether it was sports psychology or sports marketing, sports have always been in the front of my mind.”

Burke, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, walked on to the women’s soccer team during the second semester of her freshman year. She also is involved with SAAC, where she helped put on the first Bosscar awards ceremony for athletes. She would love to stay involved with athletics after graduating.

“I plan on getting into marketing,” she says. “Sports marketing is what I’m shooting for, but I love the creativity of marketing and the execution of a marketing plan. Over the past couple of years I’ve had a lot of great opportunities during the summer with internships at Turner Sports, as well as working with a sports event company during the Masters golf tournament. So I guess the goal now is to find a good job and a company that will take me.”

One of Burke’s greatest memories of her time here at Wofford involves sports. Specifically, the football team.

“When our football team beat App State in 2007, that was one of the most intense, exciting games that I’ve ever been to or been part of,” she says. “I loved the atmosphere and the hype. That’s one game I’ll never forget.

“I’ve had a lot of great memories at Wofford, though. Being part of Zeta and the soccer team really opened things up for me.”
