Program Descrition
The Wofford Presidential Seminar was conceived as both a capstone experience in the liberal arts and as a recognition of graduating seniors distinguished for their academic achievement and their contributions to the college community. Participants, nominated by their departments and selected by President Dunlap, become part of a semester-long colloquium involving not only themselves and the two moderators, Drs. Dunlap and Dinkins, but various Wofford faculty members, alumni, and friends of the college invited to join individual sessions.
Basically a "great ideas" seminar, the class meets once a week, on Wednesday afternoons, for discussions of assigned readings in literature, history, economics, political science and other related fields that, taken together, represent the heart of our western intellectual tradition. Meetings are held on the Wofford campus, beginning in the Holcombe Room of the Burwell building. Sessions last from 3 to 6 pm, with 15-minute breaks midway through each session. A reception and dinner follow at 6:00.
The essence of the seminar lies in the on-going discussions and in the Great Conversation implicit in the texts. But each student will be expected to submit a final essay, which will be described more fully in the course of the semester.
