Updates from the Search Committee

March 8, 2013

We are happy to report that the search for the next Wofford president is progressing very well and remains on schedule. The closing date for applications has now passed and we are moving forward. The Search Committee met on Thursday, March 7, and began to select candidates whose backgrounds and experiences seem especially consistent with the qualifications established for the Wofford presidency. The committee will meet again on March 19 to extend our evaluation and to select a small number of candidates who will be invited to confidential preliminary interviews with the Committee early in April. On completion of that round of interviews, the Committee will select candidates to participate in more extensive interviews with representatives of all campus constituencies. We will notify you of the specific methods, dates, and times for this final phase of the search, as soon as they are determined.

We are extremely pleased with the quality of the candidate pool and, as a result, continue to be mindful of the need for complete confidentiality. All of our remaining candidates are engaged in other assignments with very significant responsibilities. To prematurely expose their interest publicly in Wofford’s presidency would likely result in their withdrawing from our search. We will move forward with an effort to strike the appropriate balance between maintaining confidentiality with enabling adequate exposure between the candidates and Wofford’s people and programs. If you have any questions, please direct them to David Beacham (beachamdm@wofford.edu)

Thank you for your continued interest and support.

Feb 6, 2013

The search committee met on Tuesday, February 5, to review our early progress and to affirm our schedule over the next several months. We began the actual review of candidate papers and we discussed evaluation parameters that will help us focus on the desired attributes of Wofford’s next president. We will use these parameters in assessing applicants for the presidency in the weeks ahead.

Our advertising continues to appear this month in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Women in Higher Education, Hispanic Outlook, Diverse, and United Methodist Jobs. We have distributed roughly 4,300 search profiles nationally to inform selected individuals about the search and to request their suggestions of persons we should consider. Additionally, information about the presidential opening has been shared electronically with all of Wofford’s constituents.

We ask again that you, too, suggest people who might be attractive to Wofford in this search. Please contact our consultant, Tom Courtice, at tbc@agbsearch.com with names and additional contact information related to any potential candidates. The nominations and suggestions that we receive from those closest to the Wofford program can be among the most meaningful in the process of candidate generation.

We will review application materials throughout the next month and we plan to meet again in early March to evaluate our general progress and to begin reducing the candidate pool to a smaller group. At this point, we are very encouraged by the initial responses to our search activity. Please be assured that we are confident that the search is progressing on the timeline we have envisioned and that we should be able to conclude successfully later in the spring as planned.

The committee will continue to stay in touch with you throughout the process.  Your comments and questions are welcome at any time (contact David Beacham—beachamdm@wofford.edu). Be assured that we will treat all information from you in total confidence.

Thank you for your continued interest and support.
