  • Why major in Philosophy?

Philosophy majors study the fundamental questions about life, analyze major philosophical works that have influenced thought throughout the ages, and examine the ways philosophy impacts and influences other disciplines.

Many students are not introduced to philosophy in high school, but discover a real interest when they take one of the many introductory level courses designed to familiarize students with the discipline.

Philosophy courses are offered on topics that include: ethics, religious philosophies, logic, feminist philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, and history of philosophy. These courses are often conducted in seminar format and place a heavy emphasis on in class discussion. Since most courses are also reading and writing intensive, students quickly develop critical reasoning and reading, logical thinking, and written communication skills.

During the senior year students complete a senior directed study or a senior honors project about a chosen philosophical topic.
