Wofford hosts concerts, other performances and programs

Christmas Concerts set for Saturday and Tuesday; Mendelssohn event Thursday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College will present its annual Choral Christmas Concert on Saturday, Dec. 5, and its Concert Band and Chamber Players will perform their Christmas concert on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

In addition, the Chamber Music Series will host the 200th birthday celebration of German composer Felix Mendelssohn with a performance of the Mendelssohn Octet on Thursday, Dec. 3. Other programs also will be featured this month.

All programs are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Thursday, Dec. 3

Chamber Music Series hosts 200th birthday of Mendelssoh

Featuring guest violinist and concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra William Preucil; the Vega Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at Emory University; Miles Hoffman, violist and dean of the Petrie School of Music at Converse College; Charae Kreuger, cellist and guest cellist of the Atlanta Symphony; and Eun-Sun Lee, violinist, professor and director of the Chamber Music Series and Chamber Players at Wofford.

Thursday, Dec. 3

Novelist Jeff VanderMeer

Jeff VanderMeer has had novels published in 15 languages and has won numerous awards. He has edited or co-edited more than a dozen influential fiction anthologies, and he is co-director of Wofford’s Shared Worlds summer creative writing program.

Saturday, Dec. 5

Music Department Christmas Concert

Wofford Singers will perform K. Lee Scott’s Christmas Cantata “The Incarnation” and other seasonal works.

Monday, Dec. 7
6 p.m., Montgomery Room, Burwell Building
Revolutionary War Roundtable

Tuesday, Dec. 8

Wofford Concert Band and Chamber Players Christmas Concert

The Wofford College Concert Band and Chamber Players will present an exciting Christmas Concert in Leonard Auditorium. This program will feature strings selections from Mozart String quartets, Saint-Saens “Bacchanale,” from Samson & Delilah; Bizet “Farandole” from L’Arlesienne Suite No.2; and a Paganini Caprice! The strings and band will perform all-time favorite Christmas excerpts.

Friday, Dec. 11
4 p.m., Sandor Teszler Library Gallery
Christmas Recital by the Goldtones

The Wofford Goldtones women’s singing group will present a seasonal recital in the intimate setting of the library gallery.
