Lumber-Wrap Banners of Kris Neely

Neely LumberWrap

Oct. 6-Nov. 5, Liberty Trail

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Lumber-Wrap Banners of Kris Neely, an exhibition, will be featured from Oct. 6 through Nov. 5 in the Liberty Trail area on the Wofford campus. The opening event will be at Liberty Trail on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 4-6 p.m.

During his MFA studies at Goddard College, Kristofer Neely developed a professional artistic practice, often making marks on found materials and installing pieces in the local landscape of Spartanburg. Experimenting with easily transportable materials, Neely found the discarded shipping wrappers around the local lumberyards that his great-grandfather and his sons established after the Depression.

This installation of large banners repurposes the utilitarian black and white surfaces of the lumber wraps. Some are covered with paintings, others with text -- the ideas, poems, and images drawn from his thesis and portfolio work. Neely's hope is that this installation in the landscape can serve as an invitation to continue a dialogue about the role of the visual artist at Wofford College, in the community, and in the landscape.
