Wofford Theatre presents ‘The Visit’

Wednesday, March 08, 2006

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford Theatre will present Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s “The Visit” at 8 p.m. nightly Thursday through Saturday, March 9-11, and Wednesday through Saturday, March 15-18, in Tony White Theater in the Raines Center.

Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults; for reservations, call (864) 597-4080.

“The Visit,” termed a “tragicomedy,” is a dramatic exploration of vengeance and the relationship between wealth and morality. It tells the story of a rich widow’s triumphant and presumably charitable return to her hometown of Gullen, which has languished in poverty for years. With her artificial body parts, bizarre retinue and boundless wealth, Claire Zachanassian is one of the theatre’s most compelling female characters. The cast is rounded out by essentially two other characters: Alfred Ill, her former lover and the real reason she is back in town; and the people of the town of Gullen, who form a sinister Greek chorus. “Through these characters, Dürrenmatt gives us a darkly comic, breathless, and in the end, unanswerable debate about the nature of justice and redemption,” says Wofford Theatre director and professor of theatre Mark Ferguson.
