Southern Guards Battalion ROTC presents awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Guards Battalion ROTC presented a number of awards during its annual awards ceremony held at Wofford College recently.

The Battalion is the Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) for students at Wofford, Converse College, Spartanburg Methodist College, the University of South Carolina Upstate and Limestone College.

(Note: At the time of the awards ceremony, Parks Bunch, Matthew Campbell, Alan Lancaster, Roshanda Rogers, Ashley Sellars and Mike Wood were all cadets. Since the ceremony, they have been commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, as shown below).

These awards were presented:

2ndLt. Parks Bunch (Wofford ’07) received the American Legion Military Excellence Award, presented annually to outstanding advanced program cadets at academic institutions for general military studies. The award was presented by Brig. Gen. Ed Hall on behalf of Spartanburg American Legion Post 28.

MSIII Cadet Dustin Abele (Wofford ’08) received the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Award, presented annually to outstanding advanced program cadets at academic institutions for scholastic excellence. The award was presented by Brig. Gen. Ed Hall on behalf of Spartanburg American Legion Post 28.

2nd Lt. Ashley Sellers (USC Upstate) received the Daughters of the American Revolution Senior ROTC Award, presented annually to a graduating ROTC student who has demonstrated academic excellence, dependability, good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership, and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of ROTC. The award was presented by Judy Allen of the Nathanael Greene chapter of the DAR.

2nd Lt. Matthew Campbell (Wofford ’07) received the Sons of the American Revolution Senior ROTC Award, presented to a meritorious cadet enrolled in each participating institution, showing a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, soldierly bearing and performance excellence. The award was presented by Mike Farr, representing the Daniel Morgan Chapter of SAR.

MSIII Cadet Terrance Floyd (USC Upstate) received the Military Officers’ Association of America Senior ROTC Medal, presented to an outstanding MSIII cadet who shows exceptional potential for military leadership. The award was presented by Lt. Col. Manuel deGuzman on behalf of Lt. Col. (retired) Gene Kilcawley, the chapter’s 2nd vice president for ROTC affairs and the senior Army instructor at Spartanburg High School.

The Military Order of World Wars Award is presented annually to cadets who are outstanding in military and scholastic studies during the academic year; the order is a patriotic service organization composed of former and current military officers dedicated to ensuring American values are recognized in tomorrow’s leaders. The awards were presented by Col. (retired) John Harden to MSI Cadet Shawna Smith (USC Upstate), Bronze Award; MSII Cadet Gerald Jones (USC Upstate), Silver Award; MSIII Cadet Jason Parnell (USC Upstate), Gold Award.

MSIII Cadet Robert Wiltberger (USC Upstate) received the National Sojourner’s Award, presented annually to an outstanding MSII or MSIII cadet who has contributed the most to encourage and demonstrate Americanism within the corps of cadets on campus. The award was presented by Col. (retired) John Harden.

MSIII Cadet Jonathan Harbin (USC Upstate) received the Scottish Rite Award, designed to recognize second or third year cadets that display patriotism in their extracurricular activities and community service projects. The award was presented by Freddy Thompson.

MSIV Cadet Alysia Butler (USC Upstate) received the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The award was presented by Capt. Simon Stricklen.

MSII Cadet Neal Quinn (USC Upstate), MSIII Cadet Tamara Prioleau (USC Upstate), and 2nd Lt. Roshanda Rogers (Wofford ’07)  received the Reserve Officers’ Association Award, presented to an outstanding MSII, MSIII and MSIV cadets who have demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership, moral character and high aptitude for military service. The award was presented by Capt. Simon Stricklen.

2nd Lt. Alan Lancaster (USC Upstate) received the United States Automobile Association Spirit Award, presented annually to a cadet who demonstrates and furthers esprit de corps throughout the Southern Guards Battalion. The award was presented by Capt. Simon Stricklen.

MSIII Cadet Chalonda Williams (USC Upstate) received the Southern Guards Battalion Physical Fitness Test Achievement Award. The award was presented by Sgt. 1st Class Fred Keigley, the Southern Guards Battalion’s training NCO.

MSI Cadet Lee Boone (Limestone College); MSII Cadet Neal Quinn (USC Upstate); MSIII Cadet Brian Gomes (USC Upstate); 2nd Lt. Parks Bunch (Wofford ’07) received the Army Physical Fitness Training Excellence Award, presented to the top contracted cadet from each military science (MS) level.

MSII Cadet Ken Campbell (USC Upstate) and MSII Cadet April Story (USC Upstate) received the Army Physical Fitness Training Improvement Awards (male and female), presented by Sgt. 1st Class Fred Keigley.

MSIII Cadet Tamara Prioleau (USC Upstate) and 2nd Lt. Parks Bunch (Wofford ’07) received the Southern Guards Battalion Superior Fitness Award (male and female), presented for the highest Army Physical Fitness Training score during the academic year. The awards were presented by Sgt. 1st Class Fred Keigley.

MSIII Cadet Brian Gomes (USC Upstate) received the Von Stueben Award, which recognizes cadets for their achievements in drill and ceremony. The award was presented by Master Sgt. John T. Fawcett.

MSII Cadet Tyner Elgin (USC Upstate) received the Ranger Award, given to the cadet who participates on the Ranger Challenge team and best exemplifies the Ranger ethos of “Lead the Way” through physical fitness and technical and tactical mastery. The award was presented by Sgt. 1st Class Fred Keigley.

The following cadets were recognized for completing Cadet Professional Development Training during the past year:

Army’s Cadet Troop Leadership Training – 2nd Lt. Parks Bunch (Wofford ’07), 2nd Lt. Matthew Campbell (Wofford ’07) and 2nd Lt. Roshanda Rogers (Wofford ’07)
Airborne Qualification Course – 2nd Lt. Alan Lancaster (USC Upstate) and MSII Neal Quinn (USC Upstate)
Air Assault Qualification Course – MSII Tyner Elgin (USC Upstate)

MSIV Shaun Gray (USC Upstate) and MSIV Sheresa Buchanan (USC Upstate) received the Southern Guards Battalion Professor of Military Science Leadership Award, presented by Lt. Col. Manuel deGuzman.

MSI Cadet Shawna Smith (USC Upstate), MSII Cadet Gerald Jones (USC Upstate), MSIII Cadet Brian Gomes (USC Upstate) and 2nd Lt. Mike Wood (Wofford ’07) received the Department of the Army Superior Cadet Citations, presented annually to exemplary cadets in each Military Science level recognizing their commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the field of training. The citations were presented by Lt. Col. Manuel deGuzman.

2nd Lt. Parks Bunch (Wofford ’07) and 2nd Lt. Mike Wood (Wofford ’07) received the Department of the Army Distinguished Military Student Citation, awarded annually to the top 1/3 of each class at the beginning of their senior year. The citations were presented by Lt. Col. Manuel deGuzman.

2nd Lt. Mike Wood (Wofford ’07) received the Department of the Army Distinguished Military Student Citation, selected by the U.S. Army Accessions Command based on academic records, military leadership abilities and leadership camp evaluation. He also received the Maj. Gen. James C. Dozier Award, the Southern Guards Battalion’s highest honor, awarded annually to the top Military Science senior, as well as the George C. Marshall Award, presented by the George C. Marshall Foundation. Wood was selected nationally for campus leadership and stewardship, military skills during training. The awards were presented by Lt. Col. Manuel deGuzman.

2nd Lt. Parks Bunch (Wofford ’07) received the Southern Guards Leadership Award, presented annually to a senior cadet who has contributed significantly to the ROTC program. He has served as a Ranger Challenge Commander, Ranger Challenge Platoon Sergeant and Commander of the Southern Guards Battalion and Cluster FTX Officer in Charge. The award was presented by Lt. Col. Manuel deGuzman.
