Incoming freshman receives Richardson Family Scholarship

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Matt Lane, a senior at Carlisle High School in Carlisle, Pa., has been awarded the Richardson Family Endowed Scholarship at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. The scholarship is among Wofford’s premier scholarships, providing full tuition, room and board, and fees as well as a wide range of opportunities throughout the four years of college.

Lane, the son of Bryan and Debra Lane of Carlisle, was selected as the 2005 Richardson Family Scholar as a member of the incoming freshman class from a pool of more than 400 applicants nominated by their high school counselors or principals to participate in the Wofford Scholars Program. He plans to major in economics.

Lane, a member of the National Honor Society, the Latin Honor Society and a designated AP Scholar, has earned distinguished honor roll status for 14 consecutive periods. He has played varsity football and lacrosse and is a two-time state judo champion. He also is a professional snowboard instructor.

This year, Lane was selected to both the Carlisle Sentinel and Mid-Penn All Star football offensive teams. He is a member of Grace United Methodist Church and is active in Young Life and Campaigner, two faith-based ministries to high school youth. He is a member of the senior class council and was elected as team captain of Carlisle’s state-ranked football team.

The Richardson Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 1989 by Mr. and Mrs. Jerome J. Richardson and their children, Jon, Mark and Ashley. Mr. Richardson is a member of the Wofford College Class of 1959, a two-term member of the Board of Trustees (1978-90; 1992-2003), and the principal owner of the Carolina Panthers NFL team. This program provides a full four-year scholarship that includes comprehensive fees, books, and a laptop computer, in addition to opportunities for travel and activities related to the Carolina Panthers. At least one Richardson Scholar is chosen in each entering class. Selection criteria includes moral force of character; strong family commitment; instincts for leadership; energy and inclination to use one’s talents, as evidenced by participation in sports and/or other active hobbies; scholarly accomplishments; and evidence of courage, sense of duty, unselfishness, and concern for others.
