Wofford to ‘Reflect! Celebrate! Build!’ for Black History Month

SPARTANBURG, SC—Wofford College students will celebrate Black History Month, themed “Reflect! Celebrate! Build!” with a variety of programs, including literary readings, a trivia contest and comedy night, and a film discussion series.

These events are scheduled:

Thursdays, Feb. 12, 19 and 26. Film Discussion Series, 7 p.m., Shipp Hall Lounge, hosted by the African-American Association of Students (AAAS). An “enlightening celebration of African-Americans in cinema” will include a variety of films chosen by the participants. The public is invited to attend this free program. Monday, Feb. 18, “College Comedy Night featuring Lavell Crawford and Shawn C.” Featuring “side-splitting humor of Black Comedy Tour comedians,” the event will take place at 9 p.m. in Zach’s in the Campus Life Building. This program is open to college students only. Admission for Wofford students is free with a Wofford ID; other college students, $5 with a college ID. Thursday, Feb. 21, students will test their knowledge of black history in the Black History Trivia Challenge at 7 p.m. at Zach’s in the Campus Life Building. Categories will include politics, inventions, entertainment and more. Prizes will be given. The program is sponsored by Transitions. Sunday, Feb. 24, “Literary Salon 2002: Inspiring a Nation of People” will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Papadopoulos Building. Share in a celebration of African-American heritage through literature and language. Students, faculty and staff will share pieces of literature for, by and about African Americans that have inspired countless nations of people. Contact Debbie Deas at 597-5378 for information.

Wednesday, Feb. 27, the community is invited to join AAAS for a culturally inspired event as Black History Month comes to a close on a motivational note. Speakers and a performance by the Wofford College/Converse College Gospel Choir will be the highlights. The location for the 6:30 p.m. event has not been determined.
