Dees to Receive Honorary Degree Sept. 5

SPARTANBURG, SC—The beginning of the 2002-03 academic year at Wofford College will be highlighted by the presentation of an honorary degree to Morris Dees, founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, on Thursday, Sept. 5, at the opening convocation.
Wofford student registration will be Monday, Sept. 2, with the start of a full class schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Dees, who also serves as the chief trial counsel for the center, will deliver an address at 11 a.m. on Sept. 5 in Leonard Auditorium in Main Building. The program is free and open to the public.
A successful book publisher and lawyer, Dees co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit organization that combats hate, intolerance and discrimination through education and litigation, in 1971. Dees is a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he also received his law degree. He has received numerous honors and awards for his work at the center.
Another highlight marking the beginning of the fall semester is the “Summit,” a two-and-a-half-day adventure learning experience that combines freshmen, upperclassmen, faculty and staff for outdoor activities, group initiatives and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The program takes place Tuesday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Aug. 30, at Camp Greystone in Tuxedo, N.C.

Tuesday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Aug. 30 – The “Summit,” Camp Greystone, Tuxedo, N.C.
Friday, Aug. 30 – Students arrive on campus, move into residence halls. Opening Orientation Session, 3 p.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building; other orientation meetings continue throughout the day in various locations.
Saturday, Aug. 31 – “The Path to Academic Success,” orientation session, 8:45 a.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building; other meetings continue throughout the day in various locations. Soccer game, 1 p.m., Snyder Field; football vs. Newberry College, 7 p.m., Gibbs Stadium.
Sunday, Sept. 1 – Class of 2006 photograph, 10:45 a.m., front steps of Main Building; worship service, 11 a.m.; other orientation meetings continue throughout the day in various locations.
Monday, Sept. 2 – Registration, 10 a.m., Benjamin Johnson Arena, Campus Life Building; abbreviated class schedule, 1-4 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 3 – Regular classes begin, 8 a.m.
Thursday, Sept. 5 – Opening Convocation. Morris Dees, speaker and honorary degree recipient. 11 a.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building. The public is invited to attend this free program.
Saturday, Sept. 7 – Class of 2006 Orientation Service Day.
